    Götgatan

From the centre of Gamla Stan, walk or take the metro 1 stop to Södermalm Island and stroll along the main street Götgatan and its surroundings.

The district between Slussen and Medborgarplatsen Square is one of the liveliest in all of Stockholm.

    Bars, pubs and cafes

Södermalm is more local, unlike Gamla Stan. You'll find significantly fewer touristy souvenir shops here, and even the local restaurants are outnumbered by locals over tourists.

The main street Götgatan is full of shops selling clothing brands, jewellery, as well as the usual local shops selling optics or stationery.

As you turn off Götgatan into the side streets, you'll literally come across very nice cosy cafes to stop in during the day and equally cosy bars and pubs to end the day in.

    Accommodation on Götgatan

The area around Götgatan is a great place to stay. The lively district offers everything you need, and several metro lines and buses will take you all over Stockholm from here.

However, there are only the more expensive quality hotels here.

    Transport to Götgatan

The northern part of the island of Södermalm has excellent transport links.

        Street in Södermalm, Stockholm, Sweden

Götgatan (Original SwedishGöthegatan[1] for "Gothia Street") fryst vatten the name of one of the longest streets in huvud Stockholm on the Southern Isle (Södermalm) of the city. The street itself has existed since the 12th century, and has had its name since the s, the name based on it being a part of the old Göta highway.

At its nordlig end behind Stockholm City Museum it connects to Södermalm Square at Slussen, and it runs due south from there to the former toll position of Skanstull and a high bridge (Skanstullsbron) leading over to Globe Arena and mainland suburbs.

Götgatan passes spacious Citizen Square (Medborgarplatsen) and one of Stockholm's first skyscrapers popularly called Skatteskrapan (the Tax Scraper) because until recently it housed Sweden's tax authority. In a country known for high tax rates, the term Barescraper has also been used for the building, and for decades taxpayers would traipse along Götgatan and line up ceremoniously to file their income tax forms on the day they were due.

Greta Garbo was born a block west of Götgatan, and there is a bust of her on the (newer) building. A square
